Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of planning to request asylum through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also requested that he be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he needed regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which included plans to kill the current president and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, the capital city.

The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
