The Boss Enzo Maresca Calls Lead-Up Period as His 'Most Difficult 48 Hours' at the Club
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca remarked that the run-up to the weekend's triumph against Everton represented "the most challenging 48 hours" of his tenure at Stamford Bridge.
The 44-year-old made a somewhat cryptic message in his after-game interview even after earning a 2-0 win at home courtesy of finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those crucial points sent Chelsea back into the Premier League's top four, perhaps improving the atmosphere following a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the team's winless run to consecutive fixtures.
Yet, when asked about Gusto's assist and general performance, Maresca surprisingly shared his annoyance over the previous two days within the organization.
"The way the lads want to improve has been fantastic and this is the explanation why I applaud them - because with so many problems, they are performing admirably after a difficult week," he commented.
"Since I joined the club, the past 48 hours have been the toughest because many people failed to back us."
When pushed further on the specifics, the ex- Leicester City manager elaborated: "Worst 48 hours since I came to the club because people didn't support me and the team."
When asked if he was referring to people internally at Chelsea, he replied: "Broadly speaking. Overall," before specifying when queried if it was aimed at supporters or the media: "I love the fans and we are extremely content with the fans."
Fitness and Disciplinary Woes
Maresca also pointed to Chelsea's persistent fitness and disciplinary issues, noting they had been without star attacker Cole Palmer for a large portion of the campaign, as well as losing linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and striker Liam Delap to a couple of serious injuries.
"I really commend the players and the squad because we played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them without Moises Caicedo, eleven of them without Cole Palmer, almost all of them minus Liam Delap," he explained.
"And this squad, no matter who is playing, they are performing exceptionally. Today was 5 games in 12 days so undoubtedly when you see Cole Palmer available, we said many times that he's our top player but we play the vast majority of the season without our top player.
"We play five games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would like people outside to recognize because the commitment from the players is outstanding."
Chelsea's win over Everton consolidated their position in fourth in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup last-eight clash at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle to come in the coming days.
Speculation Regarding Maresca's Remark
It was ambiguous what exactly prompted Maresca to label the previous 48 hours as the most difficult of his tenure as Chelsea manager.
In that period, the coach had traveled back with his staff and players from his native Italy, held a training session at the training ground, faced a pre-game news conference where he appeared at ease, and secured a victory over an high-flying Everton side.
It was hard to discern whether any particular press stories had unsettled him, if social media discourse were a factor, or if it was something more significant from inside the club at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca only sought to rule out that it was an matter involving the club's fans, some of whom have still have yet to fully warm to him since his appointment from Leicester in July 2024.
