A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the new year.

The winning offer for the 243-kilogram fish was submitted by the company of a nationwide sushi restaurant group, which operates restaurants across the country and overseas.

"The year's tuna signals good luck," commented the company president, a notable bidder at the traditional new year's auction.

Referred to as the Tuna Tycoon, this businessman is renowned for making substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic year-opening auctions.

Auction Shock and Record-Setting Precedent

After the auction, the successful bidder informed journalists that he was "astonished at the amount," noting, "I expected we would be able to acquire it a little cheaper, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."

This latest purchase exceeds his own notable purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Despite previously remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to shatter his personal record another time.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically known for exceptionally high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a different food company, which announced the fish would be featured at its eateries nationwide.

The intense activity at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has evolved into a major tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

From Auction to Plate

The extremely valuable tuna was quickly processed for patrons at the bidder's sushi chains immediately after the auction concluded.

"I feel like I've begun the year in a positive way after eating something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," said one elated diner.
